My grandma used to have one of these singing Billy Bass fish, and I would always play with it when I went to her house. After a while it broke, and instead of singing it would start screeching, and we would laugh. In searching for non-contrived and ‘raw’ groundings in my work, I felt this memory acted as an ‘honest’ foundation for a piece of work. I made two of these so they, in a sense, could reach out to each-other.
